Our Land
The Living Farm stewards 132 owned acres and an additional 80 acres under lease. Our regeneratively managed pastures support Black Angus cross cattle, dairy and wool sheep, and laying hens. We offer a year-round CSA and handcraft wool products from the fleece of our pasture-raised sheep.
Eco-Friendly Practices
At The Living Farm, sustainability guides everything we do. We are continually working toward greater self-sufficiency, with the long-term goal of operating fully off-grid.
Our solar-heated greenhouse system, originally developed through a Colorado State University grant from 2004–2007, still powers 19 grow beds that produce salad greens all winter using only solar heat. Low tunnels and frost blankets help retain warmth overnight, allowing us to eliminate propane heaters in our greenhouses.
Our home, built in 1996, is super-insulated and designed with passive solar heating. Even at 5,500 feet in the Colorado Rockies, it requires very little additional heat.
We also close the loop on the farm by composting plant waste from our gardens, home, and greenhouses together with animal manure to create rich compost for future crops.
Growing Philosophy
At The Living Farm, everything begins with the soil. Healthy soil grows nourishing plants, nourishing plants feed healthy animals, and healthy food strengthens families. Our pastures are managed to regenerate the land, our animals are raised on pasture with daily care, and our crops are grown without synthetic chemicals.
What we sell is the same food we feed our own family.
We believe farming should restore more than it removes. Our work is not only about producing food, but about renewing soil, caring for animals, and contributing something lasting to the land and community. Through our CSA, wool products, and teaching, we also help others learn the skills of growing food so that this knowledge can continue for generations.
For us, this isn’t a trend—it’s a way of life.
