The Living Farm

At 5,500 feet in the Colorado Rockies, The Living Farm is a place where self-sufficiency, stewardship, and true organic principles are not trends — they are a way of life.
The farm owns 132 acres and leases an additional 80 acres, creating a vibrant, working landscape rooted in care for the land and the community. Fields of organic alfalfa and grass hay grow alongside corn silage and organically raised, GMO-free barley, oats, and triticale for the animals. Pastures are also leased for horses and cows, keeping the land active, productive, and interconnected.
This is a farm built on intention — where every acre serves a purpose.
Eco-Friendly by Design
The Living Farm has long been committed to eco-conscious innovation and continual improvement. Their ultimate goal? Total self-sufficiency and an operation fully off the grid.
Solar-Heated Greenhouse
From 2004–2007, the farm was awarded a grant from Colorado State University to operate an experimental solar-heated greenhouse. A custom solar heating system was built to warm 19 grow beds, allowing salad greens to thrive all winter using only solar energy. The system remains in place and functioning beautifully to this day.
Low Tunnels & Frost Blankets
Low tunnels and frost blankets are used inside greenhouses to capture and retain heat overnight. This thoughtful system has eliminated the need for propane heaters entirely — a major step toward energy independence.
Passive Solar Home
Built in 1996, the main farmhouse is super-insulated and designed with passive solar heating. Even in the high-elevation Rockies, the heater rarely runs after February and typically doesn't turn on until after Thanksgiving. Smart design meets mountain resilience.
Composting & Closed-Loop Fertility
All plant waste from the gardens, home, and greenhouses is composted together with animal manures, creating rich compost that feeds the soil the following year. Nothing is wasted. Everything cycles back.
A True Organic Philosophy
At The Living Farm, "organic" isn't a certification — it's an identity.
Their philosophy comes from a time before organic became a marketing term. It is a belief system, deeply ingrained in who they are. They do not rely on a certification body to define their integrity. Instead, they invite transparency.
They can tell you exactly how every plant and animal is raised — and you are welcome to come see for yourself.
Food here is grown as if it were going directly to their own table:
-
Free of chemicals
-
Nutrient-balanced
-
Environmentally friendly
-
Raised with care and accountability
No piece of paper is needed to validate what is evident in the soil, the food, and the relationships they've built over the years.
The Living Farm is a testament to what happens when thoughtful design, hard work, and deep-rooted values come together — creating food that nourishes both people and the planet.
